Submission Guidelines

flo. is a print and online publisher. While our approach varies for each platform, our end goal remains the same: to highlight the literary work happening in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

Please note that our guidelines for our print and online publications differ. See below for specific guidelines.

CURRENT STATUS: CLOSED FOR SUBMISSIONS

Our print issues are published semiannually. Submission periods are as follows:

April 1st-May 31st

October 1st-November 30th

  • We accept previously unpublished work from emerging and established writers residing in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

  • We pay 40 CAD per published page, up to 160 CAD. All published writers receive one (1) contributor copy.

  • You may include one (1) submission per genre, per submission period.

  • Submissions are accepted via Submittable, linked below during open submission periods.

  • Simultaneous submissions are allowed and encouraged, but please let us know if your work is accepted elsewhere.

  • If published in a print issue, please wait for one submission period to pass before submitting to our print publication again.

Any submissions that do not adhere to the above criteria may remain unread and unanswered, at the discretion of the editor.

Fiction up to 3000 words sent in a .doc or .docx file. One (1) story per submission.

Non-fiction up to 3000 words sent in a .doc or .docx file. One (1) work of non-fiction per submission.

Poetry up to five (5) poems per submission in a single .doc or .docx file with each poem starting on a separate page.

Other have something to submit but not sure where it falls? Send it anyways! As long as it contains writing in English or French, it will be considered (ex. scriptwriting, experimental prose, writing with visuals).

Copyright remains with the contributor, who is free to resell their work after publication, noting flo. as the first publisher. flo. retains the right to use excerpts of this work in promotional content. Work will not be published with edits prior to approval from the contributor.

CURRENT STATUS: OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS

Our online issues are published sporadically. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.

  • We accept unpublished and previously published work from emerging and established writers residing in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

  • Please wait for a period of 30 days after publication before submitting again.

  • Simultaneous submissions are allowed and encouraged.

  • Submissions are accepted via Submittable, linked below.

  • Avoid special formatting. As your work will be viewed on many devices, we can't guarantee that your formatting remains consistent. Please take this into account when submitting.

Any submissions that do not adhere to the above criteria may remain unread and unanswered, at the discretion of the editor.

Visual Art & Multimedia up to five (5) works sent in any format. Please include an image list with your submission that includes the title, date, and medium (if applicable).

Writing up to 1000 words per piece sent in a .doc or .docx file. Up to five (5) works may be submitted at a time, all compiled in the same document.

Copyright remains with the contributor, who is free to resell their work after publication, noting flo. as the first publisher. flo. retains the right to use excerpts of this work in promotional content. Work will not be published with edits prior to approval from the contributor.
